Coaching is about achieving behavioural change. Or is it? What we know about top performers is that they have a certain way of thinking, that drives their behaviour which then leads to success.

One of the biggest coaching challenges that managers face is how to change the way a team member is thinking. Perhaps they don’t agree with the change, are closed minded, defensive or are stuck with old habits. In other words, it’s a ‘stalemate’ situation.

So it’s the ‘thoughts’ which are driving the behaviour and this is what the coaching should focus on. Not easy, but a talented coach can do it. Once they master the art of changing the way people think, this is what can make the biggest impact in performance. .
